More · the day at sea
The Bremer Canyon killer whale expedition begins at the Bremer Bay boat harbour with a safety briefing. On board the Alison Maree, a multimedia presentation on killer whale biology and ecology sets the scene before the boat heads out, so you know what to watch for long before the first fin appears.
The cruise out to the canyon takes around 1.5 hours. Then the search begins: the skipper and crew scan for blows, fins and birds working the surface, and the boat follows whatever the ocean offers. A marine biologist explains each encounter as it happens.
Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are served along the way, with unlimited hot and cold drinks. After 8 hours you are back where you started, tired, salty and full of stories. Photos and a daily blog from the expedition follow by e-mail.
Why this day
This expedition spends 8 hours at sea on the Alison Maree, starting with a safety briefing and a talk on killer whale biology, then cruising around 1.5 hours out to the canyon. It is rated 4.93 from 147 reviews and starts from $280.
Meals, drinks and the day's photos included
More · why here
The orcas come for the canyon. Parks Australia says the undersea canyons of the Albany group funnel cool, nutrient-rich water upwards, which boosts marine life and feeds marine mammals and seabirds. The Bremer Canyon is one of the few that cuts into the continental shelf, giving deep water a path onto it.
The result shows in the numbers. The Bremer Sub-Basin supports the largest documented aggregation of killer whales in Australian waters. Researchers know more than 140 animals in this south-western population.
The water is protected too. The canyon lies within the Bremer Marine Park, which Parks Australia counts among the important gathering areas for killer whales. The Albany Canyon group and its shelf break are even listed as a key ecological feature for their high productivity.

The sea was rough, but the crew looked after everyone brilliantly, and the orcas were even more breathtaking than I had imagined. A long day, and worth it.”

I flew across the country to see wild orcas and was not disappointed: lots of orcas, pilot whales and seals. I took the recommended tablets, even though I never get seasick.”

So many orcas in one day, plus pilot whales, seals, an albatross and a shark. A great expedition and worth every penny.”

A professional crew and plenty of orcas. It got rough and photographing was tricky, but the photographers on board sent us the day's pictures afterwards.”

Friendly, knowledgeable staff who took extra care in the rough sea. They knew the orcas and told us their stories, and we got the crew's photos afterwards.”

We spent hours watching killer whales, often close, swimming under the boat and blowing beside us. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff in no hurry to head home.”
More · what guests praise
Read the reviews and the same words return: the crew, the care and the orcas. Guests write that the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and looked after everyone, especially on the rough days. The listing's own rating puts the guide at 5 out of 5.
The photos come up again and again. Guests praise the pictures taken by the crew and sent after the trip, which let them watch the whales rather than fight with a camera on a rolling deck. The listing confirms that photos and a daily blog are e-mailed afterwards.
And then there are the animals. Reviewers mention many orcas in a day, plus pilot whales, seals, dolphins and albatrosses. Several also say plainly that the sea can be rough, and that seasickness tablets are worth taking.

More · the season
The canyon trips run for only part of the year. Tourism WA says full-day canyon boat tours operate from Bremer Bay between mid-January and mid-April. The Shire of Jerramungup names February and March as the months that bring orcas to the canyon.
Science backs up the timing. In a study run from whale-watching boats in January to April of 2014, 2015 and 2016, killer whales were recorded on 91.5% of 141 trips. That is a record of past seasons, not a promise, but it shows why the boats run when they do.
Outside the season the orcas may still be around: researchers say large groups are seen mostly in summer and autumn, though the whales may use these waters year-round. For a booked trip, plan for the summer window and book early.

More · sea and stomach
The canyon lies far offshore, 70 kilometres from the town by Tourism WA's figure, and the swell rolls in from the open Southern Ocean. The operator says seasickness tablets are highly recommended and asks you to bring motion sickness prevention.
Take them before you sail. The CDC Yellow Book says these medicines do most good when swallowed before exposure, not once you already feel ill. It also says alcohol and smoking make motion sickness worse, so keep the night before quiet.
On board, stay outside and watch the horizon when you can. The CDC lists looking at the horizon, staying hydrated and eating small amounts often among the ways to prevent it. Our seasickness guide has more.

More · booking terms
With a season this short, it pays to book early. The listing offers a book-now, pay-later option, handy while flights and beds are still undecided.
Plans change, and the listing allows for that: a full refund stays open until 24 hours ahead of the trip. That matters when you are driving a long way to reach the harbour.
Leave a spare day in Bremer Bay if you can. The boat sails into open ocean, and a free day gives you room to move your trip if the weather turns.

More · the photos
Photographing orcas from a moving boat is hard. The deck rolls, the whales surface where they choose, and the best moments are over in seconds. The listing includes photos and a daily blog from your expedition, e-mailed to you after the trip.
That frees you to watch. Keep your phone in a dry bag, look up, and enjoy the moment a pod rises beside the boat. If you do shoot, use a fast shutter, keep both feet planted and hold the camera close to your body.
Polarised sunglasses help you see shapes under the surface, and binoculars help with distant blows and birds. The memories you collect with your own eyes are the ones that last.
A feast at sea
About 50 killer whales shared a blue whale off this coast in 2019.
In late March 2019, about 14 killer whales were seen attacking an adult blue whale, the first known kill of its kind. After the carcass sank, about 50 gathered to feed.
More · what to wear
Pack what the listing names: warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Even in summer the deck feels cool in the wind and spray, so pack a base layer, a fleece and a windproof jacket you can zip up quickly.
The air on the coast is mild in the orca months. At Hopetoun North, the weather station our figures come from, February averages a high of 25.5 °C and a low of 15.9 °C. Out at sea it feels colder, and you will stand still for long stretches.
The sun is strong on the water. Australia's radiation agency ARPANSA recommends sun-protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen whenever the UV index is 3 or more. A hat with a cord is worth its weight on a windy deck.
The practical part
More · the biologist
This is not a sightseeing cruise with a recorded commentary. The listing includes full interpretation from an onboard marine biologist, and the guide speaks English. The listing's breakdown rates the guide 5 out of 5.
Use that expertise. Ask how to tell an adult male from a female, what the pod is doing, or why the birds are gathering. The orcas of this population are known animals: researchers have identified more than 140 of them.
The science here is young and exciting. The first published field observations of killer whales preying on beaked whales were made in this area, from whale-watching boats. Your day out is part of the same story.

Other whales, dolphins, sharks and birds. The listing names sperm whales, pilot whales, dolphins, sharks and pelagic birds.
It can be. The operator says seasickness tablets are highly recommended.
Keep a spare day. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before; the listing does not say what happens if the boat cannot sail, so ask the operator.
More · ashore
Bremer Bay is a small town of 424 people at the mouth of the Bremer River. Tourism WA says Bremer Beach is just a 10 minute walk from town, with a sheltered cove for swimming.
Next door lies Fitzgerald River National Park. DBCA says it holds 75 native plants found nowhere else and about 200 bird species. In winter, the platforms at Point Ann are a place to watch southern right whales.
Stay a few nights if you can. A slow evening before the boat and a quiet day after it make the long journey to the coast worthwhile, and give you a spare day if the sea is too rough.

More · honest caveats
This is a day for patient, curious travelers who are happy at sea. It lasts 8 hours, sails far offshore and asks for warm clothes and motion sickness prevention. If you love wildlife and do not mind a rolling deck, it is hard to beat.
Some travelers should skip it. According to the listing, the trip is not suitable for children under 10, pregnant women or wheelchair users, and swimming and snorkeling are not allowed. Hotel pickup is not included, so you need your own way to the harbour.
And nobody can promise the orcas. Wild animals go where their food takes them, and the listing makes no guarantee of a sighting. Go with open eyes and an open mind, and you may well come home with something to remember.
